Arts Charter

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- This is what Mikey Hubbard loves to do. The 11-year-old wasn't really into sports like other boys at his school.

Paola Padovan: "His forte was singing, or playing piano, and so he felt like he had no outlet in a regular traditional school."

And it made him feel like an outsider. He didn't even want to go to class.

Paola Padovan: "He's a great kid, and he was miserable, and it was killing me."

Alfredo de la Rosa: "OK, going back to the beginning low B flat."

Then his mom found something different at Miami Arts Charter School! Alfredo de la Rosa opened the doors three years ago.

Alfredo de la Rosa: "It was a tremendous demand, in this community, Miami, in this particular neighborhood for a fine arts, visual arts, performing arts and academic school."

Grade six to 12 attend the school which offers programs in music, drama, ballet and modern dance as well as the visual arts.

Alfredo de la Rosa: "But also with the peace of mind of knowing that the academic program was going to be very solid in math, english, science and social studies."

Students have to audition to be admitted.

Vanesa Vigil: "I was really nervous to audition, cuz I'm like what if I don't get in, but I got in so."

But once in, they are free to focus on their talent.

Gabriel Benitez: "It allows for a method of expression and it just feels right."

Alfredo de la Rosa: "It is not unusual for students at this school to typically be here til nighttime hours."

The Miami Arts charter school is becoming so popular they're attracting students from all over.

Alfredo de la Rosa: "From Bay Point to Little Haiti and we have them from far away as Broward and we even have students from overseas."

This Hungarian exchange student traveled here to develop her talent as a violinist.

Mikey has been thriving since he switched schools because he finally feels like he belongs.

Mikey Hubbard: "This school you can be who you want to be and who you really truly are."

His mom says now he's excited about learning and that makes everyone happier.

Paola Padovan: "As long as they're happy and they come home smiling I think that's really the key."

Miami Arts Charter is currently accepting applications for the next school year.
