Theater & Art Camps

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- Singing, dancing and performing in front of a live audience.

Students are encouraged to be dramatic at theater camp presented by the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Nina Felice, Director, Summer Theater Camp: "We're going to visualize, visualize, visualize."

Nina Felice is the camp's director, who teaches kids from 6 to 18 years old all aspects of the stage and theater.

Nina Felice, Director, Summer Theater Camp: "We will give them dance classes, tap, jazz and ballet, acting classes, which we'll do improvisations, character study, scene study, monologues."

Mikey Simon was hooked after his first show five summers ago.

Mikey Simon, Loves Theater Camp: "I loved it. I just thought being on stage, watching everyone look at me, just amazing."

Campers are separated by age into three groups and rehearse for a Broadway-style show they perform at the end of the session.

Eleven-year old Lanie can't wait for her next performance, and neither can her mom.

Stacy Bomar, Parent: "Last year, she did 'Oklahoma,' and she got to dance and sing a little bit."

And the best part is, the camp really builds confidence.

Jill Kratish, Broward Center for the Performing Arts: "Building up self-esteem of every child in the camp, making everyone feel special, giving every one of them their moment in the sun."

Teacher: "We're going to do our background now. What is the background?"

Girl: "Blue."

From the performing arts to the visual arts, these petite Picassos are having a blast at the Young at Art Children's Museum in Davie.

At this camp, kids get to express their creative side through painting, drawing, pottery and more.

Adrienne Chadwick, Young at Art Children's Museum: "Each week, we mix it up with a special activity, like black and white photography, print making, silk screening."

The weekly projects are based on a movie theme. The first week will be 'Pirates of the Caribbean.'

Kids dress in costume and make treasure chests out of clay.

Seven-year old Alicdair is proud of his work.

Alicdair Ray, Loves Art Camp: "I love doing it, and I really love this pirate hat right here."

And parents love being able to take their child's masterpieces home.

Maria Marquez, Parent: "The teachers have them working on projects that we see at the end of the week, and they're awesome."

Lynn Martinez: "Both camps run pretty much all day, good for you working parents, and the theater camp has three locations."
