Kids Arts Gallery

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- When people think of Homestead, car racing may come to mind but you might want to start thinking cultural mecca.

Natalie Prieto: "You have no idea how good this is."

Natalie and her husband Carlos run the Children's Gallery and Arts Center in downtown Homestead.

Natalie Prieto: "This is what they call a culturally underserved community, so whatever happens related to the arts is well appreciated."

Kids of all ages and economic backgrounds are welcome to come here after school and express their creative side.

Natalie Prieto: "What we do is work with the kids interests that's why we're successful because we develop the project based on what they want."

Kids can learn sculpting, drawing and painting. 5-year-old Summer has been a budding artist since the age of three.

Summer Swanson: "Cuz art is fun and I like drawing."

Her mom was surprised to find a place like this in their own backyard.

Veronica Swanson: "This gallery appreciates children's artistic expression and they encourage them to express what they're feeling and thinking."

The gallery is also very important to Diane and her son Stormy who suffers from a form of autism. Children with special needs are encouraged to communicate through art like Stormy's self-portrait.

"You would be surprised that they're amazing artists and they have this creative mind that is non-stop."

Natalie says there are a few rules the kids have to follow: Be creative, finish what you start and don't be judgmental.

Natalie Prieto: "You simply don't criticize the work of another artist. I don't think that anybody is qualified to do that."

And it's all paying off with these young artists proud of their accomplisments.

Antonio Franco: "I just love it, every little bit makes me happier and happier, every little progress."

Lynn Martinez: "The kids get to exhibit their work several times a year. Right now you can see it displayed at Homestead City Hall. There is no price set for classes it all depends on what the family can afford."
