Coach Kim Love: "We made this pesto pasta this morning."

This is not your ordinary home economics class. These students at Cypress Bay High School are getting a hands-on lesson in health and nutrition.

Coach Kim Love, Cypress Bay High School: "Typically speaking teens don't eat too many healthy foods and they eat fast food too much."

Health and physical education coach Kim Love saw a real need for change and started the fitness and lifestyle design class. She plans and cooks healthy meals for 35 students every day.

Coach Kim Love: "I go to the grocery store about five days a week."

Today the students helped her make a pesto pasta chicken using only fresh ingredients.

Coach Kim Love: "We're not having the preservatives, we're not having the sodium, and then we're watching the portion control."

Coach Kim Love: "It's time to eat!"

Students don't just eat and run here.

Coach Kim Love: "So carbs it's 40."

They take note of what they ate.

Dr. Elaine Rancatore: "Each teaspoon of sugar contains four grams of carbohydrates."

And learn from guest speakers like ER doctor Elaine Rancatore.

Dr. Elaine Rancatore, ER Physician: "To know the contents of a food label and how to look at the ingredient list and to really be aware of the words that mean sugar."

Trainer: "On your mark, get set, go!"

This class doesn't end in the classroom. Students hit the YMCA in Weston with a certified trainer who works on their fitness and form.

Trainer: "Try not to look forward when doing the pike, good."

Seventeen-year old Andrew loves working out during school and takes the coach's cooking lessons home with him.

Andrew Savitz, Student: "I like to cook at home, so I'm definitely applying what I've learned here."

Veronica admits to not having paid much attention to nutrition before. Now she's lost weight and has a lot more energy.

Student: "I'm actually very cautious of what I put into my body now."

Students pay a monthly fee of $35 to cover the cost of food.
