Holiday Camp

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- These kids are making reindeer puppets just in time for the holiday season.

Aileen Quinones, YMCA Camp Director: "We're going to decorate it. Mine has a candy cane, a Christmas tree, a wreath."

Gluing, coloring and being creative are just some of the fun things kids enjoy at the YMCA of Greater Miami's after school program.

Aileen Quinones: "We offer arts and crafts activities. We also offer a lot of outdoor activities, a lot of different games."

But now, even better news for working families, the YMCA is offering a holiday camp for kids during the upcoming winter break.

Aileen Quinones: "A lot of parents can't take their vacation days or have no vacation days to take during the winter break."

Susan Campos is one of those parents. A busy working mom of three, she says this time of year can be a challenge, but a camp like this helps a lot.

Susan Talentto Campos, Working Mom: "It's a great program, especially during the holidays when we can't all get the same time off."

She likes the fact counselors keep kids busy with a variety of activities.

Susan Talentto Campos: "Every day doing something different for them, so they always come home telling me the different things they do or the group activity they worked on for that day."

Susan Talentto Campos: "Thanks."

Her oldest son, 9-year-old Ryan, loves playing outside with his friends.

Ryan Campos: "Kickball, football, sometimes soccer, hoola hoops and boxball."

The holiday camp will run for the two week winter break from seven a.m. until six p.m., at four different sites.

Aileen Quinones: "We're going to be holding the holiday camps at our Homestead YMCA, our South Dade Y, Miami Lakes Teen Center and Ojus Park at Aventura."

Ryan Campos: "This has been a very fun day mom."

Ryan loves spending time at the "Y" and it gives his mom peace of mind that he's safe while she is at work.

Susan Talentto Campos: "I pick them up, they're safe, they're happy and I bring them home and it's easier for me as a mom."

Group of Kids: "The YMCA rocks!"

The cost of the holiday camp is $80 a week for YMCA members, but there is financial aid for families who qualify.
