College Counselor

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- Sixteen-year-old Taylor Silver says music is one of her passions.

Taylor Silver: "I play guitar and piano and ukulele, and I like writing songs and short stories, and I just love writing."

She's a junior, and that means taking advanced placement, or AP, classes.

Taylor Silver: "AP Psych, AP US History and AP English, and I'm taking newspaper also."

She's doing it in hopes of getting into a good college.

Counselor: "How are the classes?"

Taylor Silver: "Tough, but good."

To give her daughter an edge for college, Taylor's mom enrolled her with International College Counselors.

Mandee Heller Adler, President of International College Counselors: "College admissions has certainly gotten more competitive. We have students from all over the world applying for the same number of slots."

The goal is to match kids with the right college for them, then set up a successful path to getting there.

Mandee Heller Adler: "How do we maximize that child's resume, portfolio, expose who they really are, what makes them so unique and so special."

Mandee says, it's important to start early, before the child begins high school. Then, she can get to know the student, their interests and hobbies. She helps students build a personal binder with timelines and goals. She also helps steer them toward programs or clubs to develop their interests and build their resume to get into a good college.

Mandee Heller Adler: "We can find some really cool math opportunities for you over the summer."

Fifteen-year old Alexander Feldman came here from Venezuela. He hopes to get into Cornell, and says without Mandee's guidance, he would have fallen behind.

Alexander Feldman: "Without her, I wouldn't have taken many of the classes that I've taken. For example, now I am taking two math because of her. If not, I would be behind in math."

Mandee also suggested Alex start a community service project.

Mandee Heller Adler: "It's really about maximizing the child, making them the best them they can be, making them feel good about their individual gifts."

But it's not just about class work. She says, the best colleges are looking for kids who take their interests to the next level.

Mandee Heller Adler: "So if you're a writer, and you've been writing for the school newspaper, how are we now going to get you to write for the Miami Herald, or how are we now going to get you to write for the New York Times?"

Mandee found Taylor a summer writing program at the University of Florida.

Taylor Silver: "If it wasn't for Mandee, I wouldn't have found it, and I learned a lot from it."

And hopefully, that class and all the other advice will have Taylor playing a happy tune once the acceptance letters start arriving in the mail.

Lynn Martinez: "Mandee says, her programs are not just about getting into a good college, but it also helps them be good high school students."
