Caring for Kids

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- From the minute you walk in the door, you know it's different.

Nina Beauchesne, Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital: "This has been a project we've been working on for several years. This is a dream coming to reality."

The new Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital was specially built with kids in mind.

Nina Beauchesne: "Our patients and our families actually helped us to design this building."

Each floor has its own theme.

Nina Beauchesne: "The first floor being sports, the second floor is arts, the third floor is games and the fourth floor is dreams."

There's a family resource center with computers, medical books and TVs. There's also a play zone for kids.

In the imaging center, the MRI is built to look like a pirate ship to help ease a child's anxiety.

Nina Beauchesne: "If they're calm and feel good about their environment, that will hopefully help."

The entire fourth floor is dedicated to children battling cancer.

Each room is designed to make families feel more at home, beginning with a pull-out bed.

Nina Beauchesne: "Which is actually a space that allows two family members to sleep by the bedside."

Another plus: Kids get their own menu and order what they want when they want it.

Nina Beauchesne: "Instead of having a meal three times a day at this time and this time and this time, it's when you feel like you're hungry."

Every room has a get well network, offering video games, Internet access and movies, so kids don't get bored while going through treatment.

The hope is this warm environment will help the youngest patients heal faster.

Nina Beauchesne: "Because they will be feeling better in their mind and their soul as they are being taken care of."

Diana Diaz: "The hospital officially opens its doors on July 21. The dedication of the new hospital is Saturday, with a parade beginning at 8:30 a.m. The celebration is open to the community."
