Free Safe Text

WSVN -- April Turner is one of the lucky ones. The FAU senior was texting with one hand on the wheel when her tire blew.

April Turner: "I lost control of the car. The car started spinning and I hit the median. I rolled two and a half times."

It was a lesson learned the hard way.

April Turner: "Had I have had both hands [on the wheel] maybe I would have not hit the median."

Joseph Riano says he is tired of seeing people text and drive, putting everyone on the road at risk.

Joseph Riano: "I'm seeing people weaving in traffic at 10, 11 o'clock in the morning. It's the equivalent of having a blood alcohol above the legal limit."

That's why he developed an app called "Free Safe Text."

Joseph Riano: "We take the incoming message. We respond to it but we don't alert the driver, so they're not tempted to reach for the phone and get into an accident."

Just download and select Manual Start-up. This mode gives you complete control, along with custom responses like "you're driving" or "you're at the movies."

GPS Start-up mode kicks in atomically when your car goes 15 miles per hour. It lets the sender know you're not ignoring him.

Joseph Riano: "When I get out of the car I check my phone and there's all my messages, and now I can respond to them at my will."

And here's another bonus: Every time you send a message in Free Safe Text mode you collect points to be redeemed later for goods and services.

April Turner: "You can start getting points and put those towards something students would use, you know, food and things like that."

But for Joseph, the best reward is knowing his app might help break some very dangerous driving habits.

Joseph Riano: "I think every time someone downloads the app, I know there's someone out there who is safer on the road."

And there's nothing more satisfactory than that.

Free Safe Text is available now for Android only, but should also be coming to iPhone soon.
