Collapse ensures another idle January for Dolphins

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) - The Miami Dolphins' holiday-season swoon raises questions about the future of sixth-year general manager Jeff Ireland and second-year coach Joe Philbin.

To make the postseason for the first time in five years, all Miami needed was to win one of its final two games against the Bills or Jets, two teams out of the playoff chase. Instead, the Dolphins lost to both by a combined score of 39-7 to finish 8-8, ensuring another idle January.

Philbin said Monday he's already looking toward 2014, but said he hadn't talked with owner Stephen Ross about his future.

One option for Ross is to order changes in Philbin's staff, starting with offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, whose unit ranked 27th in the NFL in yards.
