MIAMI (WSVN) -- The Royal Caribbean cruise ship Majesty of the Seas has arrived at PortMiami with 68 people experiencing an illness thought to be norovirus, according to the cruise line.

Royal Caribbean released a statement Friday that said several people onboard the cruise ship began to experience a gastrointestinal illness believed to be norovirus. Over the course of that sailing, 66 out of 2,581 guests and two out of 844 crew members experienced the illness.

The cruise line released the following statement following the reports of illness: "During the sailing, we conduct enhanced cleaning onboard the ship, to help prevent the spread of the illness. Additionally, when Majesty of the Seas arrived to PortMiami, Florida, today, we conducted an extensive and thorough sanitizing onboard the ship and within the cruise terminal, to help prevent any illness from affecting the next sailing."

The cruise line said those affected improved after taking over-the-counter medication, which was available onboard.

The ship returned to PortMiami Friday morning and will depart later in the day, as originally scheduled.

Royal Caribbean officials said, if guests are scheduled to take a cruise with them in the next couple of days and feel uncomfortable taking their cruise, for reasons related to personal health or otherwise, they will gladly assist them in rescheduling their sailing for another time.

According to health experts, as many as 300 million people worldwide are affected by norovirus each year.
