Driver hospitalized after going off I-95

Posted: Updated:

MIAMI (WSVN) -- A South Florida woman is recovering in the hospital after the Ford Explorer she was driving careened off northbound Interstate 95 and landed underneath an overpass.

The accident happened Thursday, just after 7 a.m., near Northwest 17th Street and Fifth Avenue. According to authorities, the vehicle plummeted 20 feet to the ground. Investigators said the driver, 44-year-old Dayamid Matos, may have been trying to avoid something on the road.

The impact was so hard the car's battery ended up in the front of the vehicle. The post of a fence could also be seen sticking out from the bottom of the vehicle. Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Ignatius Carroll said,"She is very lucky that vehicle landed where it did because that impaled pole could have landed inside the vehicle and possibly killed her."

Officials said the vehicle, which landed near a school, landed on a safe area not only for the kids, but for the driver as well. "When the vehicle flipped over and landed on its side ... you can see it did not land on the sidewalk, which is good with the kids walking, but it was impaled on the fence that blocks that area of the highway," said Carroll.

Rescue crews transported her to Jackson Memorial Hospital, in serious condition with injuries to her face after a painstaking extraction process. "Sustained some serious, crushing damage to the vehicle, making it somewhat of a tedious operation to try to get her out," said Carrol.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

You can work up a great big hunger when you're an action hero, especially if you're playing a guy who's half man, half god. Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson gets really hungry in his latest movie, "Hercules." Our So-Flo homeboy had to stay pretty jacked for the role. That meant watching his diet, but when it was finally time to let loose, he knew just where to go.
