FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- An elementary school teacher stands accused of stealing more than $6,000 from an elderly woman she called a friend at church.

Fifty-nine-year-old Catherine Champon faced Broward County judge John Hurley, Thursday morning. "Are you currently employed?" he asked her.

"Yes."

"OK, what type of work do you do?"

"Teacher."

Champon stands accused of stealing more than $6,000 from Rose Forester, who she thought was her friend. "When everything came out and my neighbor explained it to me, I said, 'My friend did what?'" said Forester in disbelief.

Eighty-five-year-old Forester said she met Champon at church. Not long after Champon started offering Forester rides to church her money started disappearing. "I don't use my cards, and yet there were all these bills coming in," said Forester.

According to Champon's arrest report, she used Forester's credit cards to put a down payment of $3,000 on a new car, bought two wedding dresses and pay a pricey fee for her suspended driver's license.

Champon is a first grade teacher at Village Elementary school in Sunrise. "She's a school teacher, she should not be thinking that way. She's supposed to teach your kids what's right, and how to behave and what's innocent and what's not," said Forester. "How could she have that mentality? I wouldn't think she'd have that kind of mentality."

Champon is being held on $11,000 bond.

The school district said she is still a school employee until the investigation is concluded.
