1 dead, 6 hospitalized in rollover wreck

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida teen was killed and six others were rushed to the hospital Saturday after they were involved in a rollover wreck that shut down all westbound lanes on the Julia Tuttle Causeway for more than four hours.

Florida Highway Patrol, Miami Beach Fire Rescue and City of Miami Fire Rescue responded to the scene of the crash, which occurred in the westbound lanes of Interstate 195, near Alton Road, Saturday, at around 4:45 p.m.

Officials said a sport utility vehicle carrying seven people crashed through a guardrail and flipped over. "Now, the vehicle broke the guardrail and ended up tumbling and landed on the rooftop, down the embankment, close to the water," said Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Ignatius Carroll. "The impact was so severe that we believe that multiple people may have been ejected from the vehicle."

All seven victims were rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Rescuers fought to keep a 14-year-old girl alive. "Paramedics were performing CPR on her and frantically trying to save this little girl's life," said Carroll.

FHP Trooper Garcia Cruz said the teen would not survive. "One of the passengers was taken to Jackson Trauma, where they pronounced her deceased at the scene," she said.

FHP shut down all westbound lanes on I-195, one of the main arteries out of Miami Beach. The collision brought Miami Beach traffic to a standstill during the South Beach Wine and Food Festival.

Carroll said the teen's death is a tragic outcome. "It's a very unfortunate incident that happened here, and right now our prayers are with the family," he said.

Among those transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital was a 7-year-old girl. The other five victims were adults. Their conditions remain unknown.

Troopers reopened the westbound lanes of I-195 around 9:30 p.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. There were no other vehicles involved in the wreck.

Sometimes, love can be hard to find in South Florida. The same can't be said for burgers, though. Tasty patties are everywhere. A new joint is offering up a unique take on this favorite comfort food. It's fresh, healthy and tastes like nothing you've tried before. Welcome to Burger Love.
