Emerson Hart

Posted: Updated:

Emerson Hart has only one head, but he wears two hats. The front man for 90s rock trio, "Tonic" is about to release "Beauty in Dis-repair," his second solo album. Tonic's sharing the stage with Dishwalla and Vertical Horizon at Revolution in Fort Lauderdale, Friday night call it a music lover's dream.

"If you could only See" is the song that broke tonic big-time back in the late 90s. Led by Emerson Hart, the group continues to refine its style of guitar-driven rock. Their audience has gone through some changes, as well.

Emerson Hart: "It's women who grew up with the records and then bring their daughters who are now in their teens, and it's younger musicians who grew up with the records 'cause of their brothers and sisters it's a really interesting mix of people."

Leading a band and pursuing a solo career sounds like a lot of work. For Emerson, it's a way to keep the creative juices flowing.

Emerson Hart: "I like to light fires so I like to have a solo career still do tonic stuff. I try to do as much as I can to keep working and keep fresh."

When it comes to writing new material for himself or the band, Hart doesn't worry too much. He lets the song make the decision.

Emerson Hart: "Songs will always tell you where they're supposed to be it's almost like I have nothing to do with it. We can go in and tonic can start tracking it and we'll get halfway through it and I'll go, 'This is not right.'"

Emerson gets to turn it up loud at a tonic gig.

Emerson Hart: "You can expect mostly a lot of rock in your face."

His solo shows are something entirely different.

Emerson Hart: "I like to do listening rooms smaller theaters because I can actually hear everybody and people can call songs out and everybody can be involved in the show."

Whenever he visits his family in SoFlo, work is the last thing on his mind.

Emerson Hart: "Usually when I'm at my mom's place in South Beach. I pretty much just eat all the time and drink all the time."

I'll never forget the endless summers I spent on the coast of North Carolina. My shoulders were always kissed by the sun, my hair was continually salty from the ocean and my one-piece, bright blue bathing suit was my constant companion.

The last time I had on a pair of overalls, I was miles from civilization with a whip in my hand, an hysterical co-worker by my side and five angry cowboys staring me down.

I don't remember dying, but I did. Twice. It was a chilly Fall morning in October at a dentist's office in Santa Fe. My mom had escorted me to what was supposed to be a regular wisdom teeth extraction appointment.

Sometimes, love can be hard to find in South Florida. The same can't be said for burgers, though. Tasty patties are everywhere. A new joint is offering up a unique take on this favorite comfort food. It's fresh, healthy and tastes like nothing you've tried before. Welcome to Burger Love.

Some people are good at putting out fires. They're called firefighters. Others are good at baking pies. They're called bakers. But one man is excellent at both. He's a crusty firefighter, and we mean that in a really good way.
