Police arrest shopping plaza burglar

Posted: Updated:

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police have arrested a man caught on surveillance video breaking into several stores at a North Miami Beach shopping plaza.

On Feb. 20, at around 3 a.m., police units arrived at a shopping center in the 13700 block of Biscayne Boulevard after security alarms at several businesses went off.

According to police, six stores in the shopping center had been burglarized by someone smashing the front windows of the stores using large rocks.

After reviewing surveillance video of the suspect allegedly smashing the front window of the Razor King Barber Shop, police were able to identify the man as Alfredo Rey. Lassadra Melendez, the owner of the barber shop said, "Our shop was broken into, and our alarm system was detached from the wall."

Police said he went into the barber shop and took cash from the register. A surveillance camera at the shop caught him in action. Melendez said, "The damage he's done, three businesses, between the three of us, we had to pay $2400 to repair our doors, which ... it's unheard of."

Police said he also hit an E-cigarette store next door to the barber shop. The owner of that shop said the burglar cost them $600 in damage. "We just started," said Romi Sonconi, who works at the vandalized business, "and $600 is a lot of money for this business."

Police said he also broke the window of the Sok Nail salon, at the mall.

Officials said Rey had been released from prison last December after being sentenced to four years for committing burglary, grant theft and tampering with a witness.

According to police, he also stole from more than just the Razor King Barber Shop but also several of the other businesses.

Some people are good at putting out fires. They're called firefighters. Others are good at baking pies. They're called bakers. But one man is excellent at both. He's a crusty firefighter, and we mean that in a really good way.
