So. Fla. students meet Broadway's War Horse

Posted: Updated:

MIAMI (WSVN) -- Trotting around the corner of the Adrienne Arsht Center and Biscayne Boulevard is Joey, the life-sized horse puppet and the star in the Broadway hit War Horse could fool a less discerning eye.

About two dozen elementary school students met Joey during a workshop hosted by the Arsht Center, Tuesday morning. The puppet nuzzled their necks as they got an understanding of how this horse worked. "Everything you're seeing is all mechanical," said a spokesperson presenting the horse to the children. "There's no machines doing this, no electronics."

Joey is one of several horse puppets in the Tony Award-winning play. It's a heartwarming tale of loyalty and friendship. The play is coming to the Adrienne Arsht Center as part of its Broadway in Miami season.

Students also met the workhorses inside this puppet horse.

Brian Robert Burns who controls Joey's heart said, "The body of the horse is 70 pounds. It's made of chain and aluminum primarily, and when we take a rider, that's an extra 170 pounds on top of that, so between the three of us."

Lucas Gonzalez, a student at South Miami K-8 Center, said, "I think that they put a lot of work into it, and it looks really awesome."

Another student, Camilla Carrasco, said, "It looks like the horse is doing it all, and they're just doing nothing."

Executive Vice President at Adrienne Arsht Center, Scott Schiller, said, "To see these life-size puppets is really important. It engages, it inspires, and it's a great way to spark interest in young people."

There are no special effects, animatronics or robotics, just good old-fashioned puppetry. Jessica Krueger, who controls Joey's hind, said, "It took us about two weeks to get going with the puppets, and then we brought humans in, and then we started to learn the show within the puppets. It's really an ever-evolving process. It's something that we're always trying to tweek and improve upon."

You can see War Horse through March 4 through the 9, at Adrienne Arsht Center.
