2 toddlers critical after being found in pool

SUNRISE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Two toddlers that were found unresponsive in a swimming pool are in critical condition.

Neighbors fear the prognosis for these twins, who are brother and sister, does not look good. At about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, a crime scene investigation van pulled up to the scene. Two water toys could be seen floating in the pool's shallow end.

According to Sunrise Fire Rescue, the little boy and little girl, both approximately 1-and-a-half to 2 years old, were found by someone at the bottom of a clubhouse pool at Pines of Springtree apartments, located at 3551 N.W. 85th Way in Sunrise. At around 11 a.m., neighbors placed frantic 911 calls that recorded screams in the background.

Neighbors believe the children wandered away from an apartment on their own. A firefighter and police officer dove into the pool to retrieve the kids. Sunrise Police Officer Cindy McCue said, "We received a call with two children ... obviously there is some urgency there when two children are reported being in a pool, possible drowning, so an officer and a firefighter were the first to arrive and they were able to remove the children from the pool and administer CPR."

Neighbors said the children do not live at the apartments but their mother works at an office on the property, and it is unclear if they were being supervised. They called the mother of the children a good mother and noted that she often left her children with someone at an apartment there while she worked her shift at the complex. "She's a good mom," said Ericlicia Witherspoon. "I can't... I do not even know what else to say."

Witherspoon only had nice things to say about the children. "Super cute," she said, "whenever I park there I say hi or whatever."

The children were in cardiac arrest when rescue arrived, and they were transported to Plantation General Hospital.

Two emotional adults, one of them the mother of the children, according to neighbors, were seen being assisted into another fire rescue truck, just before 11:49 a.m. Ron Witherspoon said, "I seen the police, there was three officers holding her down, and I guess they were consoling her, and while she was there she was screaming, yelling and she was upset."

Joshua Garza knows the mother. "What sucks is that she works so hard to keep us happy and this ends up happening, so I really feel bad."

"Nice mother, she's a really nice lady," echoed Ron Witherspoon

It's unclear whether or not police will charge anyone in this case.

Police said both children are alive, but they would not elaborate beyond that.
