President, First Lady to visit local high school

Posted: Updated:

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- The President and First Lady are making a return trip to South Florida and one group of students could not be happier.

On Friday, the Obamas will be at Coral Reef Senior High School in Southwest Miami-Dade. "It's very exciting. I'm very, very happy that they're coming to Coral Reef Senior High School," said student Christopher Alvarez.

Student Amber Bryan said, "I feel like it's an amazing opportunity. I've never had anything like this happen to me in my life, and I'm so excited."

Student Stephanie Franco said, "That's just like, wow, like amazing. We get to see the president and the first lady. It's such a great opportunity and we're all just so excited. I mean, just don't know what to do."

The President and the first lady will be talking about how a quality education has never been more important to achieving economic success in this country.

Although the presentation will only be for seniors, the rest of the students were still thrilled. Freshman William Gilmore said, "The fact of being inside the school with him actually being there is an honor."

Some students hope to get an opportunity to ask the president a question. Adolfo Serrato said, "Ask him what he considers his greatest achievement of his administration to be."

As the school prepared for the visit, they took a few extra precautions. "No book bags, no large purses. We can bring lunch. I think that's about it," said Bryan. On Friday morning, students were all checked with a wand before walking inside.

It seems the first family has a soft spot for South Florida. Michelle Obama was at the Jessie Trice Community Health Center in Northwest Miami-Dade, Wednesday. She talked to counselors and praised the center for helping residents enroll in the Affordable Care Act, and just last week, she was at Gwen Cherry Park where she promoted her Let's Move campaign with retired Heat superstar Alonzo Morning.

Now, with the first couple coming to their school, students at Coral Reef Senior High feel they are lucky to have this experience. "I'm pretty excited. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, you know, to be in the same building as the president," said student John Olarte.

On Friday morning, shortly before 8 a.m., supporters of the Venezuelan opposition began to gather at the school. They stood across the street holding Venezuelan flags and signs reading, "SOS." The demonstrators are trying to get the president's attention in hopes they will get a response from him about what is happening in Venezuela.

Susan Ortega, "We hope to get President Obama's attention towards Venezuela and have him settle his position towards it. We need international help. We need international help."

Supporters of the Venezuelan opposition have been asking the U.S. government to step in and help solve the crisis in the South American county. During the last month, many have died and have been injured in clashes between opposition demonstrators and the government, following a supply shortage.

Another group also gathered around school protesting deportations. The group's spokesperson, Jose Machado, said, "President Obama claims to be the champion in chief for immigration, but that is not true, due to his practices. His administration has aggressively pursued undocumented immigrants in our communities, and they live in terror."

The president and the first lady are expected to arrive at 1 p.m.

Sometimes, love can be hard to find in South Florida. The same can't be said for burgers, though. Tasty patties are everywhere. A new joint is offering up a unique take on this favorite comfort food. It's fresh, healthy and tastes like nothing you've tried before. Welcome to Burger Love.

Some people are good at putting out fires. They're called firefighters. Others are good at baking pies. They're called bakers. But one man is excellent at both. He's a crusty firefighter, and we mean that in a really good way.
