5 hospitalized in 79th Street Causeway collision

Posted: Updated:

MIAMI (WSVN) -- Five people were rushed to the hospital after a driver crashed into a truck occupied by a family of four, on the 79th Street Causeway, Thursday night.

Officials said the driver was heading eastbound on the causeway when he lost control of his Mercedes-Benz sedan, hit the median and ended up in the westbound lanes on top of the bridge, near Pelican Harbor, in Miami. His vehicle then struck a pickup truck traveling westbound.

The impact trapped the driver of the Mercedes inside his vehicle. Paramedics were able to extricate him and transported him to Jackson Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

A family of four in the pickup truck were also transported to JMH. Three of the victims, including two teens, suffered minor injuries. Officials said a woman sustained serious injuries but is listed in stable condition.

Authorities rerouted all westbound traffic on the Causeway while the victims were transported and crews cleaned up debris. Westbound lanes were reopened around 10:30 p.m.

Some people are good at putting out fires. They're called firefighters. Others are good at baking pies. They're called bakers. But one man is excellent at both. He's a crusty firefighter, and we mean that in a really good way.
