Man in coma after being shot, loved ones speak out

Posted: Updated:
NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Family members and loved ones are speaking to just one station after a man was wounded in an alarming attack.

Twenty-five-year-old Luis Carlos Ruiz was shot in the head on Feb. 21, in the area of 95th Street and Northwest 29th Avenue, just after 9 p.m. According to police, Ruiz was outside, in his front yard, when his family heard a gunshot. "I just heard 'boom,'" said the victim's girlfriend.

Residents went outside to find Ruiz with serious head injuries. "I found him lying down on the ground with his arms wide open, and I seen that it was a gunshot because there was a huge wound on the left side of his head," said the victim's girlfriend.

Rescue crews transported Ruiz to Jackson Memorial hospital, where he's been in a coma for two weeks.

Ruiz' girlfriend and sister noted he had no enemies, no criminal record and held a steady job. They are both concealing their identities, because they are still in fear of the gunman at large.

The victim's girlfriend believes he was not targeted. "I think it was random, or he could've been robbed," she said.

Those closest to him want answers and are praying he will recover. "We don't know if my brother is going to make it, but we pray for that," said the victim's sister.

Ruiz girlfriend said when he awakes from the coma, his motor skills will likely be severely affected.

If you have any information on this shooting, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
