Calle Ocho returns to South Florida

Posted: Updated:

MIAMI (WSVN) -- The world's largest block party is days away, as music, food and fun will fill the streets for Calle Ocho 2014.

"This was started as a small event a long time ago and has grown throughout the years," Chairman of Calle Ocho 2014 and of Kiwanis Club of Little Havana Jerry Fernandez said. "You know, this year, we feel like it's the best Calle Ocho ever."

It's the 37th year for the big hit music festival. Several acts include: "Leslie Grace, Frankie Negron, Johnny Ventura, Oro Solido, Chino Y Nacho, all kinds of great acts," Fernandez said.

The long-running tradition of crowning a king is still in effect. Puerto Rican songwriter and recording artist Daddy Yankee will be reigning over this year's event. "I feel honored to be part of the Carnaval and being the king," Yankee said. "It's a big festival, and I'm inviting all the Latino community to the festival, to the Carnaval, you know, everybody get together ... it's about the Latino thing."

Southwest Eighth Street through Little Havana will close to vehicle traffic Saturday night, at 8 p.m. As many as 300 vendors of all types will be setting up shop as they prepare to please the big crowds. "By the time the cars get off about, 10, 10:30, 11, you'll just see a massive transformation," Fernandez said. "Within eight to 10 hours, you'll see all the vendors come on the street, all the sponsors. We're gonna have ten stages this year in Calle Ocho."

Carnaval will come to a colorful end with an event titled as the world's largest block party. "The amazing thing is that it's such a massive thing that you really got to pick where to be because there is so many great acts, so many great things going on at the same time," Fernandez said. "You know, four or five o'clock on Sunday, I don't know where I am going to be because there's going to be great acts on all the stages."

Calle Ocho 2014 begins Sunday, at 10 a.m.
