Dog donated to police department following tragic crash

Posted: Updated:

DORAL, Fla. (WSVN) -- It is a heartfelt dog donation after a South Florida man gave his pet to a police department to become a K-9.

The German Shepherd named Bear was donated to the Miami-Dade Police Department. He was owned my Maritza and Diego Medina.

September 2013, Maritza was killed in a violent crash caused by a man who had murdered two people in Southwest Miami-Dade.

Police responded to the shooting and were given information about the suspect's car. When police caught up with the car, the suspect continued to lead police on a chase. Suspect Antonio Feliu, struck a vehicle at a high rate of speed killing the driver, Maritza.

When police approached Feliu's car he was found dead inside.

After Maritza's death, her husband Diego honored her wish to donate the young German Shepherd to a law enforcement agency. "What happen after her death, Bear was trained in personal protection, so Bear kept on searching the house every time someone would come over, the door would open Bear was searching for, and unfortunately Diego couldn't handle the stress," said K-9 unit Lieutenant Jeff Schmidinger.

Schmidinger said, "This is our first dog that we've accepted as a donation in the last eight years as a patrol dog and he's working on very good."

Bear is still in training but will soon hit the streets in April to protect the citizens of Miami-Dade County. "The crash on September 18th was one of the worst in history that I can recall on US-27, and if anything good can come out of it is Bear, which I've kept his original name that Maritza named him," said Schmidinger. "This was her dog and like I told Diego, it's like having a guardian angel with me while he's on the streets protecting the citizens of Dade County and myself to have him out here working for us."
