POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Broward Sheriff's Office deputies said they were forced to fire on a man who allegedly threatened a woman with a machete.

According to detectives, 51-year-old Deosaran Maharaj was threatening a woman with a machete at a gas station on Hammondville Road, Sunday night. "She pointed out the man who had done this to her. He was inside his vehicle," said Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel.

Deputies said Maharaj disobeyed orders during a traffic stop. Maharaj exited his vehicle and then got back inside.

Officials said Maharaj wouldn't show his hands, and that's when the deputy opened fire multiple times. "The subject, at some point, was outside the vehicle. The subject went back inside the vehicle. Our deputy fired multiple shots at the suspect. We believe at this time one of the shots mortally wounded the suspect," said Israel.

Maharaj's family said they are shocked and called him a man of peace. "He was like a brother to me, a very loving and caring person," said Maharaj's cousin Andy Ganaishlal. "He was involved in his religion."

Nearby residents said they heard the gunfire. "The kids heard, 'pop, pop,'" said nearby resident Hilari Russell. "They heard two, but they said multiple, so I don't know if they consider two multiple."

BSO said Maharaj drove his truck a short distance before crashing into a tree. "The suspect did proceed in his vehicle a very short distance, across the street, a little bit south," said Israel.

Maharaj was pronounced dead on scene.

Inside the vehicle, detectives found coconuts and a machete. "Our investigators who walked around the vehicle, saw in plain view a significant sized machete in the front seat," said Israel.

"He sells coconuts and a lot of people know him by that," one neighbor said. "But I know he's not a person to take up the machete and threaten anybody. I don't know."

Those who knew him said he was likely using the machete to gather the coconuts. "That's all we know him to do, is sell coconuts," said Maharaj's friend T.J. "He is a good, kind-hearted person."

Deputies continue to investigate.

Maharaj's criminal history includes a stalking charge in 2005. In 2013, he was charged with aggravated battery.

BSO would like for the woman who was allegedly threatened by Maharaj to step forward and call them.

Some people are good at putting out fires. They're called firefighters. Others are good at baking pies. They're called bakers. But one man is excellent at both. He's a crusty firefighter, and we mean that in a really good way.
