Bunji Garlin

Posted: Updated:

When most American music fans want to groove to the sounds of the islands, they slap on some reggae. Bunji Garlin aims to change that. The native of Trinidad and Tobago was in town over the weekend for a gig at Cafe Iguana. Deco caught up with him before the show at VP Records in Miramar to get the 411 on his musical style.

Soca superstar Bunji Garlin has been a star in the world of Soca for over a decade. He thinks the time is right for his brand of party music to invade our shores.

Bunji Garlin: "It is a music that came out of an original music, which is calypso Soca is the abbreviation of meaning soul of calypso."

Soca will move your soul and your body won't be far behind.

Bunji Garlin: "It's created for more like a live environment get something up in the air, get something and wave everyone jump you know it's very very interactive."

Bunji had everybody jumping at Iguana to his party anthem, "Differentology". When Busta Rhymes heard the track, he had to get in on a remix. Busta rips it up on the remix. Bunji's wife made sure he would.

Bunji Garlin: "She got on the phone with Busta and she was like, "Listen to me when you get on my husband's track today I want the real Busta Rhymes. Give me hardcore lyrics, hardcore flow. And he was like, "All right no problem."

"Differentology" made it on a recent episode of "Grey's Anatomy."

Bunji also brought the house down at the recent South by Southwest Music Conference it's all part of a grand plan.

Bunji Garlin: "The journey will be continuous to try as much as possible to place as much of this music as we could to new audiences as far as we could reach."

The 305 has been a regular stop every time Bunji goes on tour.

He knows Miami music fans have mad love for him and his music.

Bunji Garlin: "Hey just get right into it that just makes you feel at home and makes you put on a better performance. Gives you a better energy you do a better delivery."

The last time I had on a pair of overalls, I was miles from civilization with a whip in my hand, an hysterical co-worker by my side and five angry cowboys staring me down.

I don't remember dying, but I did. Twice. It was a chilly Fall morning in October at a dentist's office in Santa Fe. My mom had escorted me to what was supposed to be a regular wisdom teeth extraction appointment.

Kindness and charm, unlike the people that live in Sin City, and i'm not talking about Vegas either. Things have changed in the town of Sin as in the motion picture while others have stayed the same. The cast of the movie told Deco what's new in part two.?

This year's Miami Spice could use a phone book just to list the restaurants taking part, more than a hundred. Which means filling up on three courses for only $39 bucks. And at some places, that means saving a whole lot of money.
