LAUDERHILL, Fla. (WSVN) -- A Broward Sheriff's Office deputy was airlifted to the hospital Friday night after, officials said, he lost control of a cruiser and slammed into a concrete wall.

According to Lauderhill Police, the deputy was driving down Northwest 18th Place in response to a call of a shooting in Lauderdale Lakes when he was suddenly forced to swerve near 36th Avenue to avoid hitting a car that had stopped in the street. The deputy then lost control, crashed into the wall and then struck an electric pole.

The deputy was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials said the deputy was conscious and breathing while he was being transported to the hospital.

All lanes of Northwest at 36th Avenue remained shut down late Friday night as police continued to investigate.

Officials said the Lauderdale Lakes shooting to which the deputy was responding was unfounded.

Some people are good at putting out fires. They're called firefighters. Others are good at baking pies. They're called bakers. But one man is excellent at both. He's a crusty firefighter, and we mean that in a really good way.
