Officials warn drivers of fraudulent SunPass toll violation letter

Posted: Updated:
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Officials have words of warning for customers across the Sunshine State who are receiving phony letters on toll payments.

South Florida drivers are used to paying tolls, but officials want customers to be aware of a letter in the mail that reads "Final Warning Notice" with a $57 balance for alleged unpaid toll violations. The letter also includes a list of unpaid toll, consequences for failure to pay, including suspension of driver's license.

The company behind the letter is called Toll Enforcement, LLC or TELC Inc., registered to a Bobby Bays. "Don't pay a dime," warned Florida's Turnpike spokesperson Chad Huff. Toll Enforcement LLC is not a company that the Florida Department of Transportation recognizes."

The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority is also warning drivers but some have already bought into the scam. "First thing I look at this, and I'm kind of mad. Why am I getting a toll violation? I have a SunPass," said driver Michael Pancier. "At first I called the number, and I realized it's a Google voice number; it's not a real phone number."

"I said, 'Wait a minute,' because they send you a photograph of your tag, and this has this bogus account number,'" said driver Joe Rubio, who also received the phony letter.

"It doesn't tell the costumer the time of an alleged infraction or the date of the infraction, or even the location of an infraction," said Huff.

Some drivers who received the bill have sent the checks to the mail forwarding facility. The man who calls himself Bobby Bays has not shown up to the facility to collect his checks. "We have not seen him. He opened the account online and sent the documentation over the mail," said USAbox.com's Carlos Dominguez.

Meanwhile, some drivers have dropped off the checks at the facility in person.

Reporter: "Did you find out what's really going on here?"

David Palacios: "Um ... not really."

Reporter: "You know it's a scam, it's being investigated. That's fraudulent. That's not real."

Palacios: "Oh ... OK."

Palacios still had doubts and cited the account number, which happened to be the same number Pancier and Rubio had.

Reporter: "There's nothing different from this bill to that one."

Palacios: "Correct, no. You surprised me."

Reporter: "I just saved you $57."

Palacios: "Thank you, sir. I appreciate it, guys."

If you receive a bill from Toll Enforcement LLC, call the Florida Department of Transportation at 888-865-5352.

Did I already say that? We also asked the cast of "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" what their vices are, from vino, cheese to Mexican food. You won't be disappointed.
