SUNRISE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A Piper High School Student has been charged with attempted murder after authorities said he stabbed a fellow student in the school's gym.

Sunrise Police responded to the high school at 8000 N.W. 44th St., around 10 a.m. Thursday, after receiving a call of a possible stabbing.

According to witnesses, a sophomore was stabbed in the chest by a senior while at the gymnasium. "My brother texted me saying that someone got stabbed in the gym, in the chest," said one of many people who arrived outside the school following the news about the stabbing.

Late Thursday afternoon, 18-year-old senior Kimanie King arrived at the Broward County Jail. The suspect is a senior. He is accused of stabbing 15-year-old Urique Wilson, a sophomore.

The victim's father said the boy was stabbed three times, in the chest, near the heart, and in the back. "He's 15 years old and he got stabbed," said Wilson's father Joseph Watson. "That's any parent's nightmare right there, to find out their kid is stabbed."

Students said the stabbing started after two boys began fighting. "They were in the gym, and they were playing basketball," said a student. "They were calling each other names and stuff. I heard they had problems before anyway."

"He was face first, and then he was on the floor and then he got back up and took something out of his pocket and stabbed him with it," said a student who witnessed the fight.

School officials are calling this an isolated incident. "It involved two students only," said Broward Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie as he addressed the media, later that afternoon. "There were no other students involved or any other altercation at all, very isolated incident with the two students."

After the stabbing, Runcie visited the school and the victim at the hospital. "I stopped by to visit the family and just to make sure everything was OK," he said. "I look at each and every one of the student in our school system as if they're mine children."

Police have said the weapon used was a pocket knife with a 2-and-a-half-inch blade. "I heard it was a pocketknife, a key, a pencil, but I think it was a pocket knife," said the student.

A concerned mother said, "I have a kid that attends the school. I gotta keep praying for him and everybody else," she said. "I am sorry for the other kids. I have to pray for everyone."

The school was placed on lockdown for about two hours while police investigated.

Wilson was transported to Broward Medical Health in Fort Lauderdale, and King was detained and faces charges of attempted murder.

"It's a pretty traumatic situation, and I really want to assure the family that we were here to support them to the greatest extent possible," said Runcie as he visited the family at the hospital. "We're glad to know that the student is going to be recovering."

Watson said, "We are just waiting. I praise God everyday because today he saved my son. Without prayer and without having God in his life he wouldn't be here right now."

This stabbing comes only a week after another incident at the school sent a different student to the hospital.

Police said a fight broke out near the school's cafeteria last Thursday.

A photo from the scene showed a student laying on the ground in a pool of blood.

The fight led to a temporary lockdown, and the injured student was taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening head injury.
