Safety tips for pool owners following boy's fatal electrocution

Posted: Updated:

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (WSVN) -- Experts and a father who lost his son too soon after a tragic electrocution want to urge other families to examine their pools.

Seven-year-old Calder Sloan's father wants parents to be warned. "Get your electricity checked. Make sure your house is grounded. Make sure your pool light is grounded," said Chris Sloan.

It is a warning many parents and pool owners have already heard. "We've definitely seen an increase in incoming calls," said All Florida Pool and Spa Bill Parrish. "Our retail store has also had a lot of walk-in traffic and buying new fixtures preemptively."

Parrish said the good news is most pool electrical fixtures, if installed properly, typically will not fail, but he says there are things to look for to indicate a problem. "It's really important to look at the light on a regular basis," he said. "Make sure water hasn't intruded the fixture, and again, look for anything abnormal like the chrome faceplate on the light can blacken."

Parrish said when a light burns out, which it does just like any other light in your home, it is time to call a professional. Most companies will take a look at the light fixture and the electrical supply to make sure things are working. "It really just starts out with a visual inspection of the equipment," said Parrish. "We want to make sure there is a low voltage transformer in place."

Lights are not the only concern, there are other things to worry about. "If you misapply the proper grounding to a pool pump, you can transfer electricity through the water and into the other metal equipment, and you can electrically charge the water," said Parrish.

Pool owners should make sure the wiring to their pools is still in good shape and properly grounded, and if in doubt, call for a full inspection.

Some people are good at putting out fires. They're called firefighters. Others are good at baking pies. They're called bakers. But one man is excellent at both. He's a crusty firefighter, and we mean that in a really good way.
