SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A lightning bolt struck the roof of a South Florida home Saturday morning, sparking a fire that caused significant damage to the property and forced out residents who have lived there for more than 30 years, officials said.

Fire officials said the lightning strike took place just after 6 a.m. at the home located on the 5400 block of Southwest 97th Court in Southwest Miami-Dade. The blaze forced out homeowner Hiram Rodriguez, his wife and another relative who lives with them.

"There was a big explosion and a bright light when the lightning struck," said Rodriguez through a translator. The homeowner said the strike left them in the dark, but their smoke detectors alerted them. They immediately called 911.

Miami-Dade Fire Chief Tony Garcia said firefighters arrived less than five minutes after Rodriguez called, allowing them to prevent any further damage. "The lightning bolt actually caused damage to the roof, caused a fire in the attic, which resulted in moderate damage to the structure," he said.

Rodriguez, who has lived in the home since 1983, said he is thankful that no one was hurt. "We're alive and well, which is the most that we can ask for," he said in Spanish.

The homeowner said he and his wife will be spending Easter with their daughter. He said it will take at least 10 days to repair the damage to his home.

After a dismal winter, the U.S. economy sprang back to life in the April-June quarter, growing at a fast 4 percent annual rate on the strength of higher consumer and business spending.
After a grim start to 2014, the U.S. economy has rebounded with vigor and should show renewed strength into next year.
