SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Hundreds of dogs and cats hoping to find forever homes were the star attraction at a 12-hour adoption marathon, Saturday.

Potential pet owners gathered at Tropical Park in Southwest Miami-Dade to participate in the Mega Pet Adoption Event.

The Humane Society of Greater Miami, Miami-Dade Animal Services and The Cat Network teamed up for the event. "We've got amazing dogs ... some like little Arnold here," said Laurie Hoffman, executive director of the Humane Society of Greater Miami, as she held an adoption candidate in her arms. "We've got puppies and kittens and dogs and cats."

The pick-a-name game was afoot for one South Florida family. "He doesn't have a name yet; we're going to think about it," said Laz Herrera, who helped his mother choose a furry new addition to the household.

Herrera said the choice to adopt was an easy one to make. "Save a dog's life, save a dog's life," he said.

Adoptions started at around $30. Participants were able to choose from a variety of breeds ready for a new start.

Mike Tammyo, for instance, took home Casper. "We've been wanting a dog for quite a while, and we realized that, you know, this is the right place," he said. "The Humane Society is [fighting for] a good cause, and you're getting a dog that you want," he said.

Rocinda Regis is overjoyed to be a new pet parent. "My baby, my puppy," she said. "I wanted one so bad, and I got her."

Regis said she knew at first glance that Princess would be perfect for her. "Look at her. She was meant for me," she said. "We have the same attitude."

Animal control officials said overcrowding is always a concern in local South Florida shelters, which is one major reason behind the mega push to adopt.

If you were unable to attend the Mega Pet Adoption Event at Tropical Park, the next one is scheduled for April 26, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Soffer and Fine Adoption Center, 16101 West Dixie Highway in North Miami Beach. There will be games, snacks and fun for children as the Humane Society of Greater Miami celebrates National Kids and Pets Day.

You can work up a great big hunger when you're an action hero, especially if you're playing a guy who's half man, half god. Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson gets really hungry in his latest movie, "Hercules." Our So-Flo homeboy had to stay pretty jacked for the role. That meant watching his diet, but when it was finally time to let loose, he knew just where to go.
