HAULOVER BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police are investigating after a charter boat captain spotted a man's body in the water near a South Florida beach, Sunday.

Captain Chad said he and his passengers on board the Outcast were a couple of miles offshore when he spotted the body in the water. "[We were] deep sea fishing, big fish, and you never now what you're going to find out there," he said.

But, Chad said, he has never seen anything like this in his 10 years on the job. "I was shocked," he said. "No one ever goes out there and expects to find that kind of thing, so it's really an eye-opener."

The captain said he called authorities immediately after he made the disturbing find. Police responded, recovered the body and closed off a docking area at Haulover Marina.

Just before 4:45 p.m., authorities pulled the body to be transported to a medical examiner's office.

Chad said he and his passengers carried on with their day, even making a large catch. He said he never thought he would become part of a police investigation. "If you ever find something like that in the ocean, it's always a mystery," he said. "You never know how it got there, you [don't] know what happened."

The man's identity and the circumstances behind his death remain unknown. The investigation continues.
