About 70 percent of brush fire contained along Card Sound Road

Posted: Updated:

SOUTH MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Fire crews have brought about 70 percent of a brush fire under control after the raging blaze burned more than 1,900 acres and caused problems for commuters heading to and from the Florida Keys.

A smokey scene now smolders where a brush fire once was. By Tuesday afternoon, more than 1,200 acres had burned, and the fire was about 70 percent contained. "The main part of the fire that we're concerned with right now is obviously on Card Sound Road," said Fred Boehm of the Florida Forest Service.

Officials had shut down Card Sound Road Monday morning when the stubborn fire, which began over the weekend, re-ignited. Crews have doused three different fires in the area and have opened and closed the road multiple times since Saturday.

On Tuesday morning, officials finally opened the road. However crews continue to patrol the area to make sure the fires do not re-ignite. "It's opened because most of the fire activity that was on the road yesterday has burned out and moved away," said Boehm. "Even though the road is open, doesn't mean that there's not a hazard associated with light, smoke, and again, our folks working on the roadway."

"I have a little bit of a hot spot that's burning right here behind us," said Gary Lewis, who is with the Florida Forest Service. "Hopefully that the wind cooperates. If I get a little of the wind shift right now, this fire could jump across this road, and I have fire that would be on the other side now possibly affecting this traffic."

For most of the day Sunday, a 10-mile stretch of Card Sound Road in South Miami-Dade was shut down. Fire officials said, by Sunday night, the blaze had covered 250 acres and continued to grow. By Monday afternoon, the fire had burned through 800 acres of land. Officials said the wind and dry grass caused the fire to spread quickly and jump to the other side of Card Sound Road.

"Right now what I see is a lot better than yesterday morning," said Lewis on Tuesday afternoon. "I don't want the wind to shift to let this fire jump the road again."

On Monday afternoon, drivers trying to get to the Keys were becoming frustrated after Card Sound Road had been opened and closed again. "It's closed tonight, so we're stuck here," said a driver. "We don't have fishing tonight, going back home."

"I saw the flames coming down U.S. 1, and I am worried about them jumping all the way over to U.S. 1 and closing down U.S. 1 also," said Amanda Lopresti who works in Keys. "At night time, I gotta watch the news and figure out how I'm gonna get to work, if I'm gonna get to work, if I can get to work."

However, there is is a silver lining to the fires. "A lot of times where the fire is burning, it's cleaning up a lot of old, dead debris, it promotes new growth. It's really, really good," said Lewis. "Right now, I'm focused on this road and the traffic and the public safety issue right now."

Fire crews remain at the scene to monitor hot spots.

The Department of Transportation is suggesting that all drivers call 511 before heading out on the road to avoid any traffic headaches.

The cause of the brush fire remains unknown.
