Dozens of rescued dogs up for adoption

Posted: Updated:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Dozens of dogs that were rescued from deplorable conditions are ready to be adopted.

The dogs were found living in filth are now being taken care of at a shelter. Bonita is one of the dogs that was rescued. She is blind in one eye and may only have partial vision in the other. "As you can see, she's definitely a little bit shy," said Cheri Wachter of the Broward County Humane Society, "so she's going to need a quiet home, just some place where she can get lots of love."

Bonita is not alone. "Gadget is probably the oldest of the group. He's about 15," said Wachter.

These are only a select few of the more than 50 dogs found at the home of Gisela Tacao in Miami. She once owned Gigi's Rescue in Hialeah, but it was shut down in 2012. In 2012, Seven News spoke with Tacao. "People come and say, 'Oh, can you please save this one. They're going to kill it or whatever.' We just did too much," said Tacao in that interview.

When police went to Tacao's house last week to serve a warrant for that 2012 case, they found scores of emaciated animals. Tacao is now in jail and faces charges of animal cruelty.

Several local shelters took in the rescued dogs, and the Humane Society of Broward County is taking pictures of the dogs in hopes of finding them loving homes. "It's sad. I feel bad for them," said one little boy who was visiting the Humane Society.

The special needs dogs are now ready to be adopted even though they are considered evidence in the new case against Tacao. "They're part of an ongoing investigation," said Wachter. "They are still considered evidence, but we do have permission to make them available for adoption."

About 25 very special Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes were taken from that rescue in Miami. A Spaniel Sheepdog was also among one of the rescued dogs, and she really needs a home. She is blind.

Some of the dogs have been adopted into good homes already, but more homes are needed. "Most of them are quiet, but they're going to need someone who is home most of the day. They need a lot of TLC," said Wachter.

Officials are hoping to find the dogs new homes. If you are interested in adopting one the dogs, visit www.humanebroward.com.

You can also visit the Humane Society of Broward County and meet the dogs in person.

You can work up a great big hunger when you're an action hero, especially if you're playing a guy who's half man, half god. Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson gets really hungry in his latest movie, "Hercules." Our So-Flo homeboy had to stay pretty jacked for the role. That meant watching his diet, but when it was finally time to let loose, he knew just where to go.
