St. Maurice church moves to new location

Posted: Updated:

DANIA BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A pastor's prayers have been answered as parishioners in a South Florida community make a big move from one house of worship to a brand new one.

St. Maurice, the church of the stable, has been a staple in the community for decades. It is with tears of both joy and sorrow that a pastor and his parishioners say goodbye to the barn they've called home for 40-years.

"It's a sad day because I met my wife on this deck," said one parishioner.

The Catholic Church which remained in the same place since 1970 is packing up. Father Roger also helped pack up the church. "This is their home. And to leave your home and go to a new home is a time of great sadness for many people in our parish community," said Father Roger.

It takes a lot of hard work and faith to move a church. For more than 40 years, the old horse stable served as a Catholic Church in Dania Beach. Thousands of masses, weddings, and other ceremonies took place in St. Maurice Church, which is why many people are saddened by the move.

The church needs major improvements, those of which the church cannot afford. "It would cost us more than $800,000 bucks to do that, and we don't have the money. We don't have the money," said Father Roger.

The church is moving further east to a different church in Dania Beach that has been empty for several years. Parishioners have mixed feelings about the move, because the newer church is not yet home.

"It's a little sad. My wife is sad. She's been crying for three weeks coming out of here," said a parishioner of St. Maurice.

The hope is that the parishioners will make the move with them, and even grow in the new church. One parishioner pointed out that it's not about the walls that make the church. "A church is not the building, it's the people. The people have to carry the message from one building to another."

The first message in the new building is Sunday.
