Concession fire at Miami Beach movie theater causes evacuation

Posted: Updated:

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Moviegoers were forced to evacuate from a South Florida movie theater after a fire started inside the concession area, Wednesday night.

"They stopped the movie and there was a bunch of alarms, and there was a lady saying, 'Please evacuate the building. There is a fire,' so everyone kept coming out," said moviegoer Isabella Bobe.

People were seen on cell phone video coming out in a cloud of smoke and covering their faces as they walked out of the Regal South Beach located on 1120 Lincoln Road in Miami Beach.

Moviegoer Diego Melendez took cell phone video of what appeared to be a popcorn machine on fire. Employees quickly went into action to try and extinguish the fire. "I saw a manager take his jacket off, and he literally jumped over the concession counter and started spraying," said Melendez.

"What shocked me the most was that everyone was going out leisurely like if it was no big deal," said another moviegoer Javier Garçon. "No one was hurting each other or running over each other."

7News viewers took pictures of the crowd as they walked out while the smoked filled the building inside. "There was so much smoke, and it was white smoke, and it was all over the place. You could not breathe," said Garçon.

Employees wore masks as they ushered everyone outside. One employee was checked by fire rescue on the scene. She is expected to be OK.

Bobe at first did not think the fire was real. "We thought it was a joke or something, so we came out last," she said.

The theater is closed for the night as crews cleaned up, but it will re-open its doors on Thursday.
