MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A man was killed after the luxury sports car he was riding in collided with a sport utility vehicle early Thursday morning, an accident that sent both drivers to the hospital and shut down the westbound lanes of the MacArthur Causeway for hours.

Miami Beach Police said the fatal accident happened around 2:50 a.m. Witnesses said a Lamborghini traveling in excess of 100 mph westbound on the MacArthur Causeway slammed into the back of a Suburban that was sitting at a red light near Fountain Street.

"After striking the Suburban, the Lamborghini continued about 100 yards after impact, which is indicative of the speed that he was traveling at," said Miami Beach Police Sgt. Bobby Hernandez.

The attorney for Raul Alfonso, the driver of the sport utility vehicle, said, "Our client was coming home from work. He's a hardworking man ... He was coming home from work and was just at a light, worked all day, was looking forward to being with his family in the evening and had this terrible tragedy," said Glen Goldberg.

Police said 42-year-old Malcolm Lloyd, the passenger in the Lamborghini, died shortly after the crash. The victim was a medical doctor and the CEO and founder of Double Cross Vodka.

Sources said 53-year-old Andres Esteban Toro, the victim's brother-in-law, who was at the wheel the Lamborghini, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital along with Alfonso, who resides in Doral. They are both listed in serious condition and are expected to survive.

The crumpled and mangled Lamborghini was taken to the medical examiner's office since the passenger's body remains pinned inside the car.

"It was a terrible accident," said Goldberg. "We are just putting it together right now."

Goldberg added his client has a long recovery ahead of him. "Right now, he's at the intensive care [unit] at the Ryder Trauma Center with numerous breaks in bones throughout his body," he said.

Police said the driver of the Lamborghini could face several charges, including reckless driving. Officials are awaiting toxicology results.

Police reopened the lanes just before 1 p.m., Thursday. The eastbound lanes of the MacArthur Causeway remained open but drivers experienced heavy traffic delays.

The investigation continues.
