Group wants Miami-Dade sewer dispute reopened

Posted: Updated:

MIAMI (AP) -- Environmental advocates want a federal judge to reopen their case against Miami-Dade County and the U.S. government over repairs to a crumbling sewer system.

Attorneys for the Biscayne Bay Waterkeeper plan to file Thursday to reopen the case. The group has been trying to force government officials to explicitly account for sea level rise in plans for $1.6 billion in repairs to the county's sewer system.

A federal judge earlier this month approved an agreement between the county, the EPA and the state's Department of Environmental Protection for the repairs, but the group complains that the agreement fails to protect sewage treatment facilities from the effects of climate change.

Attorneys for the federal government said in court earlier this year that the agreement only was intended to address specific repairs.
