200 detained after discovery of cockfighting ring

Posted: Updated:

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police detained about 200 people after they uncovered a large cockfighting ring Thursday afternoon.

The illegal organization was discovered on a multi-acre piece of property at 25425 S.W. 212 Ave. after Miami-Dade narcotics detectives executed a search warrant for possible drug activity and discovered a large, operational cockfighting ring that was in-progress.

Those detained are being questioned one by one, and multiple arrests are expected. According to Detective Roy Rutland, charges will include narcotics, weapons, illegal gambling and animal cruelty.

Corrections buses were brought in to take those under arrest to the county jail. Police said each of the approximately 200 people will face some sort of crime.

The view from Skyforce HD showed some of those allegedly involved are possibly over the age of 60. Several walked with canes, others needed assistance, including one man who was examined in a Fire Rescue truck.

Large hedges covered the property from the streets and those involved parked their vehicles under trees, a possible move to avoid being seen from above.

According to Rutland, officials were prepared; the property had been under surveillance for several months and the number of those involved is not unusual when dealing with illegal cockfighting rings.

Per pictures received from Miami-Dade Police, dozens of cages housed the roosters that were then used for the fights.

The investigation continues.
