FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Paramedics rushed to the scene during peak rush hour traffic Thursday evening after a South Florida mother gave birth to a baby girl on the side of Interstate 595.

A Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue unit arrived on the eastbound side of the highway, just west of I-95, to discover the baby had already been delivered. "Once we arrived, we found Dad kind of [a] little nervous on the scene. Mom was seated calmly with the baby on her lap," said paramedic Rolando Busto.

"The baby was nice and awake and alert," Busto added.

Paramedics said the newborn's parents were heading from Palm Beach to Hollywood to welcome the new arrival the way they had planned in advance. "She was at the doctor this morning for a checkup because she was cramping last night," said paramedic David Porter, "and she went in and they said, 'Well, you know, you're dilating.' That was this morning."

Busto said the baby's mother had a special advantage that came in handy at the inconvenient birthplace. "Coincidentally, she was a NICU [neonatal intensive care unit] nurse," said Busto. "Mom was very calm and knew what was going on."

The paramedics said the baby's father, on the other hand, was more than happy to see them show up and take over. "We did what we do, which is, we wipe down the baby, we stimulate the baby, we provide a little oxygen," said Porter.

"They pretty much took control of the scene, walked up, he clamped the baby's umbilical cord, severed it and detached it from Mom," said Busto.

The paramedics transported the new arrival and her parents to Broward Health Medical Center. "This is what we live to do," said Porter.

The baby girl is the couple's second child. She has an older brother.

Because of HIPAA laws that protect patient confidentiality, the paramedics were not allowed to disclose the baby's name.

However, mom and baby are doing great.
