NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (WSVN) -- Students at a South Florida high school received a lesson on their civic rights and responsibilities.

Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin who was shot dead in Sanford, Fla. two years ago by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman, wants to educate students on their rights.

Her message to students at North Miami Senior High School Thursday was to be aware, be safe and know your rights. "I feel it necessary to speak for the voiceless," said Fulton. "I just want to spread the word that we want to empower the students."

Her visit is part of a new mentoring program called Empowered to Know My Rights. The program is aimed to mentor and help young people in making the right decisions, even if caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. "Trayvon could've been anyone of you," said Fulton as she addressed the students.

Fulton, with help from the North Miami Police Department, talked primarily to freshmen and sophomores, some who have been impacted directly by gun violence, according to the school.

North Miami Police officer Belcher said, "I don't want none of you to fall into the situation that Trayvon fell into."

Fulton plans on bringing the program to other schools in the near future. She said she chose North Miami Senior High because she too is a product of the Miami-Dade County school system, and it just felt right.

You can work up a great big hunger when you're an action hero, especially if you're playing a guy who's half man, half god. Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson gets really hungry in his latest movie, "Hercules." Our So-Flo homeboy had to stay pretty jacked for the role. That meant watching his diet, but when it was finally time to let loose, he knew just where to go.
