DANIA BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A heartbroken South Florida family is in mourning after, authorities said, a 4-year-old boy riding a scooter on a driveway was fatally struck by a pickup truck backing out of a parking space.

Deputies said the accident happened just before 2 p.m. at 4712 S.W. 33rd Ave. in Dania Beach. "He was looking really bad. He was hurt," said nearby resident Angel Cuevas.

According to investigators, 4-year-old Xavier Crawford had left a birthday party near his home shortly before the accident. "The child was attending the party that was taking place in this neighborhood," said Broward Sheriff's Office spokesperson Gina Carter.

Deputies said he was run over on the same block he lived on by a driver who lives across the street. "He was riding his scooter down the driveway when this gentleman was pulling out of his own parking space and realized that he had struck this child," said Carter.

Neighbors said, before the accident, the boy had been playing with other children in the neighborhood and riding around on a scooter.

Cuevas said the aftermath of the accident was one of the most heartbreaking things he has ever witnessed. "I've got a kid the same age. How do you feel? It's hard," he said. "It's not an easy thing to watch and actually be there."

Cuevas said the child's mother lay by the boy's side in tears. "I saw a kid laying on the road, the mom picked him up," he said. "We ran over there, tried to help them out."

The concerned neighbor then dialed 911. "We called the police. We were there with his mom," said Cuevas.

The 4-year-old was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood where he later died.

Relatives described Xavier as a boy who was full of life, liked riding around his neighborhood on a scooter or bicycle and was a big fan of Spider-Man. "Yeah, he was playful, and he liked to ride his bike around and stuff," said a relative who asked not to be identified.

"He was sweet. He was kind," the young girl added. "Like, every time he would come over my house, he would run to me and give me a hug and stuff."

Deputies said the driver of the truck, 52-year-old Michael Reshick, stayed on the scene and cooperated with authorities. "I talked to the driver; I've seen him coming in and coming out," said Matilda Douglas, a friend of Xavier's family. "He feels bad ... he said he wasn't trying to do it, he wasn't trying to hurt no child."

They said it is unclear whether Reshick he will face any charges.

Some people are good at putting out fires. They're called firefighters. Others are good at baking pies. They're called bakers. But one man is excellent at both. He's a crusty firefighter, and we mean that in a really good way.
