MIAMI (WSVN) -- Dozens of local teenage patients unable to attend their high school proms took part in a very special dance organized just for them at Holtz Children's Hospital.

Whatever medical treatments these teens may be going through, on Friday night, those treatments became an afterthought. "Cause, like, I don't get to the prom, so for me to go, it was really cool," said patient Tiajuane Brown.

Cedric Exantes has been through a multiple organ transplant, but during this special prom, that's the last thing on his mind. "I'm feeling great, actually because I just got my tube out, and I got stitches out," he said.

For prom organizer Kim Juanico, the hard work has led to an emotional payoff. "It's an overwhelming experience between the community and the volunteers, and everything that's been a part of this," she said. "It's turned out to be an amazing experience."

Before the big night, makeup and hair stylists from Beauty Schools of America gave free makeovers to several girls attending the event. "The feeling that I get when I see the faces on these kids having fun at this prom is incredible," said volunteer Taylor Sennett.

Students from Miami Country Day also volunteered during the event.

Discount retailer Target was a major sponsor for the dance. "Target was able to donate some gift cards to get the kids shoes and jewelry and accessories and things like that for the prom," said Target volunteer Laura Pierce.

One local teen in attendance, Aaron Willis, is recovering after being shot in the back in Wynwood during a drive-by shooting in December 2012, an injury that left him paralyzed. "I'm still continuing to push myself to walk again," he said.

Willis said this was one unforgettable night. "It was like a family party, pretty much," he said. I've been treated like family emotionally since I've been here, so it's pretty much like a family thing right now."
