Miami-Dade Mayor proposes new location for Beckham's soccer stadium

Posted: Updated:

MIAMI (WSVN) -- Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez is asking David Beckham and his group to consider a new location for the new soccer stadium, according to the Miami Herald.

Beckham has shown interest in building his MLS stadium on PortMiami property, but Gimenez is proposing that the group consider building the stadium at a new location on the downtown waterfront.

The Port site has drawn strong opposition from county commissioners and Port organizers.

Beckham said the Port has always been his "number one choice" for the new stadium.

Beckham's group said they will review the new proposal. A statement issued by the Miami Beckham United group read in part, "The Port is a strong site, however a stadium next to American Airlines Arena is an exciting possibility. We will carefully examine its feasibility in the coming weeks."
