Fins player under fire for post-draft tweet

Posted: Updated:

MIAMI (WSVN) -- A Miami Dolphins player is under scrutiny after a tweet allegedly sent by him surfaced the internet.

The Dolphins would like more than anything to turn the page after a very tumultuous year, but it appears the star of the team's offensive line isn't letting that happen.

Dolphins starting center Mike Pouncey allegedly took to Twitter after the team made its first draft pick, Thursday night.

The tweet has since been deleted, but 7News was able to grab a screen shot of an earlier version from his verified page. The deleted tweet read, "Great pick! I can't wait for our gifts he's getting us lol."

Shortly after the tweet was sent out, Warren Sapp tweeted, "Some folks been dumb a long time!" along with a screen shot of Pouncey's deleted tweet. Fans also reacted to the tweet. One tweet read, "Pouncey your an idiot" and Pouncey replied, "so are you."

The team used its first round pick to select another offensive lineman, Ja'wan James from Tennessee. Making rookies buy gifts for veterans on the offensive line is one of the things Dolphins players were accused of doing in the Wells report.

James, who was officially welcomed as a member of the Dolphins Friday afternoon, told reporters he did not take the tweet seriously. "I don't have a reaction," he said. "He was probably just playing, saying things. It's all part of the process, being a rookie. I'm just looking forward to coming in and working with these new guys."

It was part of the fallout from the bullying scandal which involved former Fins players Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin. Pouncey is also named in the Wells report, but it is not the only time his name has been in the headlines.

New Dolphins General Manager Dennis Hickey said he has spoken to Martin and that it was all just a misunderstanding. "We talked with Mike," Hickey said Friday after James' media session. "Mike understands sometimes things can be taken out of context and what's meant as a lighthearted comment can be taken out of context. We talked with Mike and he was good with that."

Mike and his twin brother, Pittsburgh Steelers player Maurkice Pouncey, were photographed wearing "Free Hernandez" hats shortly after former University of Florida teammate Aaron Hernandez was charged with murder.

Mike Pouncey was also subpoenaed for a grand jury in the case by Massachusetts authorities.
