White House representatives visit Miami Gardens for 5000 Role Models

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (WSVN) -- An initiative that is the brainchild of a South Florida congresswoman is getting the attention of the White House.

President Barack Obama dispatched representatives from the White House to Miami Gardens to take notes on congresswoman Fredrika Wilson's 5,000 Role Models of Excellence Project.

For the last two decades, the program has transformed the lives of thousands of minority boys.

At Thursday's event, representatives from a variety of mentoring programs exchanged ideas to uplift at-risk children across the country.

Frederica S. Wilson, the founder of the group and a U.S. Representative (Fla.-D.), said, "We are hoping all the information they receive today they will take that back to the White House, so they can make recommendations as to what we are doing here. It's already been stated by the president that he loves the 5,000 Role Models of Excellence Project, and he wants to replicate the 5,000 Role Models of Excellence Project."

Back in March 2013, when the president came to PortMiami, he praised the initiative while surrounded by some of the program's young benefactors who served as ambassadors.
