MIAMI (WSVN) -- A college community gathered for a night of prayers and pain to support a young South Florida woman fighting for her life after she apparently fell from a bridge while running.

Cristina Gomez' sorority sisters all gathered in song and in prayer along with fellow Florida International University students, family and friends Thursday night at the campus. "Cristina, the purpose that God has for her ... she brought us all here together, and most of all, what she wants is for you to know the love of God," said Conny Blandino, Gomez' mother.

People who attended the event held a rose and shared a memory of the bright student who is studying elementary education. "She is the type of woman who does not settle for less. She expected the best for herself and expected the best of the lives of the people she loves," said sorority sister Marilyn Figueroa.

Twenty-two-year-old Gomez, an FIU senior, has been in a coma at Kendall Regional Medical Center since Monday night, after she somehow fell off a bridge on Southwest 104th Street and 149th Avenue while running.

Gomez was found under the bridge. She suffered a skull fracture, broken ribs, arm, back and other injuries.

Miami-Dade Police believe this was an accident, but her family is not convinced because she runs the route often.

"I know this happened for a reason. This was not a mistake, and she didn't deserve this, but this is a lesson that we are all gonna learn," said Gomez' brother Alex Gomez.

Gomez' family wants anyone with any information about her fall to come forward.
