Rare sawfish caught off Boynton Beach Inlet

Posted: Updated:

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. -- A South Florida man and his fishing buddies got the surprise of their lives Sunday morning when they made a rare catch: a 500-pound sawfish.

Dustin Richter and his buddies' fishing trip started pretty routine, with the boys on the waters for about an hour without any bites. They were about to head home when finally, there was a big tug on the line.

"All that adrenaline was pumping while we're pull him up," said Richter.

Two hours later, they had their 500-pound catch -- a rare sawfish.

"I kinda got to the light and we saw the fish, realized it was a saw fish," said Richter.

The boys were excited, to say the least.

"We were amazed, because it was 11 feet long and the bill was 4 feet long and it was just a crazy find," said Richter.

They documented their rare catch on video. The fish is seen flapping its way in the dark waters off the Bonyton Beach Inlet early Sunday morning.

Richter can now show off his souvenir-- a tooth from the sawfish's rostrum. Richter also proudly showed off the tool that did the job.

"That's about the size hook we used right there for that fish," he said.

Richter and his friends immediately released the fish back into the water.

All species of sawfish are considered endangered. Officials say the fish, although they appear to be dangerous, won't attack unless provoked
