MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- The 9th Annual Florida Supercon has kicked off at the Miami Beach Convention Center where Comic-Con fans are gathering to meet and greet with their favorites from the worlds of comic books, Sci-Fi and pop culture.

The four-day event kicked off Thursday morning at the Miami Beach Convention Center where thousands could already be seen packing the convention center in hopes of meeting their favorite fantasy characters.

"Jedi" Wilson, a young fan dressed as a Star Wars Jedi character, said, "My dad hopes to take a picture of us with Darth Vader, but I'm just hoping to see a lot of cool costumes, some Star Wars ones."

Florida Supercon is Miami's version of San Diego's popular Comic-Con International. Supercon started nine years ago in South Florida with just about 1,500 attendees. Over the years, the event has grown so much it moved this year to the Miami Beach Convention Center to accommodate more than 40,000 attendees, including TV, comic book, Anime, animation, video game, fantasy, Sci-Fi and pop culture fans.

Cosplayer Samantha Puentes said, "It's not only Anime, not only games, it's also Sci-Fi, and fans in general can just meet up and kinda enjoy each other's company as well as everything else the event has to offer."

"Cosplay is you dress up as your favorite character, whether Anime, video game, comic book, whatever," said Gabriel San Roman.

Amy Lovelace showed up as Princess Zelda, using common household items and a dress from her aunt to make her one-of-a-kind costume. "This is foam, and this is like my aunt's old prom dress from the '80s," she said.

Supercon organizer Sandy Martin said, "Every single group of people who is into some type of 'nerd-dom' has a great time," and added with laugh: "It's absolutely a nerd event."

Fans will also be able to check out new video games and comic books. "This is Iron Man number 55 with the very first appearance of Thanos, who's a hugely popular villain from the Marvel universe," said comic book dealer Ruben Miranda. "The price tag is $800."

One of the highlights of this year's Supercon is a wrestling match between super heroes and a costume contest.

"Game of Thrones" actors Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo in "Game of Thrones," Conan in "Conan the Barbarian" and Ronon Dex in "Stargate Atlantis") and Esmé Bianco (Ros in "Game of Thrones") are among the celebrity guests in attendance this year.

"I heard that the man who played "Slade" in Arrow is going to be here," said Melissa Castellanos.

Florida Supercon will also hold writing, animation and voiceover sessions. "It's grown from a small niche community of people who are totally into this sort of this, and now the public is all about it," said Martin.
