Local soccer fans cheer on Brazil, Colombia World Cup teams

MIAMI (WSVN) -- There was plenty of passion and pride in South Florida on Friday as World Cup fever took over parts of Miami.

While many people celebrated the Fourth of July, enthusiastic soccer fans flocked to local restaurants to cheer on Colombia and Brazil during a tense World Cup match, covering Miami in a sea of yellow.

Boteco, a Brazilian restaurant on Northeast 79th Street in Miami, became so full that police had to come to control the crowd. One restaurant even had to be closed since it was overflowing past its allowable capacity.

Brazilian fans are hoping that Brazil wins the World Cup. "I hope Brazil wins. That would be a good game, Brazil and Argentina in the finals," said one Brazilian fan.

Brickell turned into a block party as Colombian fans packed the streets at Kukaramakara, a local Colombian restaurant located at 1250 S. Miami Ave. But only one side would have a reason to celebrate all day: Brazil defeated Colombia 2-1.

Despite the defeat, Colombian fans said they are happy that their country made it to the quarter finals. "We've just made it so far that it doesn't matter at this point. It's really about our pride, and we just come here to support no matter where we g, because we've already gotten so far," said Katherine Victoria, a Colombian fan.

Brazilian fans, though, are even happier as their country continues advancing. Brazil will play Germany in the semifinals on Tuesday.
