MIAMI (WSVN) -- An elderly woman and her caretaker were left shaken but unharmed after a sport utility vehicle came crashing through their living room, Friday afternoon.

Police and rescue crews responded to the scene of the crash at a duplex on the 1200 block of Southwest 11th Street in Miami. According to officials, the 98-year-old homeowner was sleeping in a back bedroom of the home when a Hyundai Santa Fe raced through the front yard and slammed into the living room, just after 3 p.m.

"The car flew, and you saw the gate flying with the car," said neighbor Yhaire Melendez.

Melendez said she saw the SUV cross Southwest 12th Avenue when it should have made a right or a left turn. "I was like, in shock because I know who lives there, so I ran looking like this," she said as she pointed to the pieces of aluminum foil in her hair. "And I ran to the house, and I started screaming, 'Everybody's OK?' And they weren't answering."

The woman and the caretaker were both in the back of the unit at the time of the crash. Neither of them were injured.

"Of course we were scared," said a Spanish-speaking elderly woman who lives in another part of the building. "Imagine a car just coming through the house."

Police said the occupants of the SUV were a couple in their mid-60s. "The driver of the vehicle, which is a male, had his arm partially outside of the windshield of the vehicle," said Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Ignatius Carroll, "and he had to be extricated out of the vehicle."

They were taken to a nearby hospital in unknown condition.

Broken glass and cinder blocks were strewn alongside furniture, paintings and other belongings across the duplex's living room. "Imagine, everything has fallen down inside the house," said Marta Etcheverry, the homeowner's daughter. "The structure, you know, composition of the house has been damaged."

Etcheverry said car accidents in her mother's neighborhood is something they have had to deal with for years, and it's time for the issue to be addressed. "You know, there are crashes all the time in here," she said. "We have lived here since 1978. On two occasions, people have been killed crossing 12th Avenue, and nothing has been done. Maybe this will be time. They should be ashamed of themselves."

According to the family, they have had vehicles come into their front yard on previous occasions over the years. Their home has been deemed an unsafe structure, so they will be unable to stay in the part of the building affected by the crash for a long time.

It is unclear what charges the driver may be facing.
